Reclaiming Self-Love and Self-Worth This Summer: Breaking Free from Societal Expectations
Written By: Jessie Lazzell, LMHC
As the summer season approaches, the air is filled with a unique sense of excitement. The days grow longer, the weather becomes warmer, and the promise of freedom and adventure seems to be just around the corner. Yet, alongside this anticipation, there's often an undercurrent of pressure. For many, the summer months bring with them a societal demand to meet certain beauty standards. The “bikini body” narrative, the “hot girl summer” expectations, or the constant portrayal of extravagant vacations and flawless images can leave many feeling inadequate, as if they’re not measuring up.
However, the truth is that summer doesn’t need to be about fitting into a mold that was never designed for us in the first place. It’s time to embrace a different kind of summer—one that focuses on self-love, self-worth, and authentic connections. This summer, let's step away from societal pressures and create a season of self-assurance, confidence, and genuine happiness.
Understanding the Pressure of Society's Expectations
From a young age, many of us are taught to associate our worth with external factors: how we look, how we perform, how we are seen by others. With the rise of social media, these standards have become more pervasive than ever. Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms are flooded with images of perfectly curated vacations, beach bodies, and seemingly flawless lives. The “hot girl summer” narrative—full of perfectly tanned skin, toned abs, and carefree adventures—can make us feel like we’re falling short of what summer should look like.
Yet, this narrative fails to acknowledge the diversity of human experiences and bodies. It overlooks the fact that every individual is unique, with different backgrounds, journeys, and needs. The idea of the "perfect summer" is not only unrealistic; it’s also exclusionary. Not everyone has the means to embark on extravagant vacations or fit into a narrow beauty standard. And, more importantly, not everyone wants to conform to these ideals.
It’s time to dismantle the false beliefs about what summer should look like and shift the focus to something more meaningful: our relationship with ourselves. I think it is safe to say we are all guilty of falling victim to the comparison game we call life. Whether it is seeing the highlight reels on social media or looking around us and seeing “perfect” bodies or fairytale relationships—the comparisons never end. But comparison is the thief of joy, and we are reestablishing what our joy looks like this year!
Redefining Summer: Moving Beyond External Expectations
So, how do we move away from the pressure of external expectations and reclaim our self-worth during the summer season? It starts with understanding that true happiness doesn’t come from fitting into a mold or meeting someone else’s standards. True fulfillment comes from accepting ourselves as we are—embracing our bodies, our flaws, and our unique paths.
Here are some steps to begin cultivating self-love and self-worth this summer:
1. Let Go of the “Bikini Body” Myth
One of the most pervasive and damaging ideas during the summer is the concept of the “bikini body.” This idea suggests that in order to enjoy the beach, pool, or summer outings, we must first achieve a certain level of physical perfection. It often involves dieting, exercising excessively, and spending countless hours at the gym, all in the name of preparing our bodies for the summer season.
But here’s the truth: there is no such thing as a “bikini body.” A bikini body is simply any body wearing a bikini. Your worth is not determined by your body shape or size or a number on a scale, and no one should feel pressured to look a certain way to feel confident or comfortable in their own skin. This summer, focus on feeling good in your body—not achieving someone else’s version of what’s “acceptable.”
2. Embrace Body Neutrality
Body neutrality is a concept that promotes a neutral and accepting view of one's body, regardless of its size, shape, or appearance. It shifts the focus away from body image and towards appreciating the body for its functions and capabilities. It’s about celebrating the strength, resilience, and uniqueness of your body, no matter what it looks like. Summer is the perfect time to practice body neutrality—whether you’re lounging by the pool, hiking in the mountains, or simply taking a walk outside.
Instead of focusing on how you look in a swimsuit or what others might think, focus on how your body feels. Is it strong? Is it capable of taking you on adventures? Does it bring you joy? Cultivating gratitude for your body and celebrating its abilities rather than fixating on its appearance can be a powerful step toward self-love.
3. Shift the Focus from External Validation to Internal Confidence
Much of the pressure we feel to look a certain way in the summer comes from seeking validation from others. We may post a picture on social media hoping for likes and compliments, or we might feel anxiety about how we’re being perceived by our friends, family, or even strangers. But external validation is fleeting—it can never provide lasting happiness or fulfillment.
True self-worth comes from within. This summer, take time to build your inner confidence by recognizing your value without needing approval from others. Practice self-affirmation and self-compassion daily. Instead of measuring your worth by the number of compliments you receive or how many followers you have, focus on what makes you feel proud of yourself. This summer, instead of trying to fit into a mold, ask yourself:
✔️ What actually makes me feel happy and fulfilled?
✔️ What expectations am I holding onto that don’t serve me?
✔️ What would summer look like if I didn’t care about how it appears to others?
4. Practice Self-Care and Set Boundaries
The summer months are often filled with social events, travel plans, and a sense of “doing it all.” While it’s great to stay active and make memories, it’s equally important to take time for yourself. Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential for maintaining mental and emotional health. Taking care of your needs and setting boundaries allows you to recharge, so you can show up fully for yourself and others. Boundaries help protect your inner peace and are set to allow you to take control of unsustainable situations/environments/relationships.
Whether it’s reading a book on a quiet afternoon, enjoying a solo walk in nature, or practicing yoga to ground yourself, make time for activities that nurture your mind, body, and soul. Self-care isn’t just about pampering yourself; it’s about ensuring that you’re mentally and emotionally equipped to face the challenges that life may present.
5. Cultivate Meaningful Relationships and Connections
True love and worth come from the relationships we build—not just with ourselves, but also with others. But these connections need not be about fitting into societal norms or appearing perfect. Instead, they should be rooted in authenticity, trust, and mutual respect.
This summer, focus on building connections that nourish your spirit. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, who appreciate you for who you are, not for how you look or what you can do for them. Let go of relationships that are toxic or shallow. Spend time with those who truly see you and support your journey toward self-love.
For some, this might also mean cutting out the noise of social media or unfollowing accounts that perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards or unhealthy habits. Instead, focus on following accounts that promote self-acceptance, body positivity/neutrality, and mental wellness. Create a virtual space that fosters positivity and encourages self-reflection.
6. Celebrate the Small Wins
Self-love is a journey, not a destination. It’s easy to get caught up in big milestones or achievements, but true growth comes from celebrating the small wins. Whether it’s choosing to wear a swimsuit without feeling self-conscious, saying “no” to something that doesn’t serve you, or simply taking a moment to acknowledge how far you’ve come, every step counts and deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated.
Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. You deserve to acknowledge your strength, resilience, and growth. Each day is an opportunity to show yourself kindness, and each moment is a chance to practice gratitude for the person you are becoming.
Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need to “Become” Anything
As the summer season unfolds, let it be a time of growth, self-reflection, and authentic connections. Break free from the pressure of societal expectations and embrace your body, your worth, and your unique journey. Your self-love and self-worth are not defined by your appearance or your social media presence. They are defined by how you treat yourself, how you honor your needs, and how you choose to show up in the world with confidence.
This summer, let go of the “bikini body” myth and instead embrace the beauty of self-assurance. Focus on what makes you feel good, what makes you feel alive, and what makes you proud of who you are. Build meaningful relationships, practice self-care, and celebrate every step of your journey toward self-love.
True happiness doesn’t come from fitting into a mold; it comes from embracing the freedom to be your authentic self. This summer, let’s let go of the pressure and just be.
Now that’s hot.
